I was born in West Virginia and my family has called Clay County home for generations. I was raised on the farm where my family has lived for hundreds of years. My wife Kirsten, also a Clay County native, and I now live just a few miles from where we were raised and are raising our two daughters in Wallback, WV.
Growing up, I learned the value of education from an early age and knew the importance of giving back to my state, my community and my country. I’m still part of the many organizations that helped to shape me in to who I am today. Every year, I volunteer for the Future Farmers of America and the Technology Students Association to help our young people have the same opportunities that I did.
After I finished up law school at West Virginia University and my Ph.D. in chemistry at Notre Dame, I settled back in Clay. I now commute to Charleston to practice law.
At home, I volunteer with local farmers to help market their produce as well as with the Clay County Business Development Authority and other local groups. I’m honored to serve as a Deacon at Fola Missionary Baptist Church.
I was always drawn to public service and am humbled that the citizens of Clay, Calhoun and Gilmer Counties have allowed me the privilege of serving them in the West Virginia Legislature. I’m also proud that colleagues have elected me as the Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates.
I fully believe that West Virginia’s brightest days are ahead but it will take the hard work of all Mountaineers to move us forward. I pray every day for the guidance to make the right decisions for our beloved state.
My wife Kirsten and I are members of Fola Missionary Baptist Church, where I serve as a deacon. We live in Wallback with our two daughters, Kathryn and Rebecca.
In addition to representing Calhoun, Clay and Gilmer Counties as the Delegate for District 33, I serve as the Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates.

“'This is step zero in what would be a lengthy process for a few Maryland counties exploring the prospect of breaking away and formally joining the state of West Virginia, but we certainly would welcome any border communities that may see their values better reflected here in the Mountain State,' said Speaker Hanshaw.
“'It’s beyond dispute that those states that don’t have an income tax are in fact growing — they do have growing economies and growing population bases. We’d like to join those states...'" [Hanshaw said].
"Gov. Jim Justice, House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, and other officials were on hand Tuesday to cut the ribbon on an extension and renovation for one of the state’s newest rail trails on Central West Virginia."
